Festive doesn’t have to mean full. It doesn’t have to sparkle from every surface or smell like a bakery at full volume. There is another way to decorate a space for Christmas without making it feel glittery, tinsley or having any hint of nativity. We're aiming for seasonal without being obvious.
The One-Candle Rule
Burning multiple candles at once is scent overload, not to matter toxic AF for many of them.
The one-candle rule is simple: one candle per room, chosen well (both in fragrance and toxicity). It becomes a focal point rather than a competition for your senses. Opt for a larger candle with a clean burn and a subtle fragrance. Place it where it can throw its scent through the room well. A coffee table, console, bedside, or dining table. Add some more fragrance free candles at different heights if you want to up the mood.
Scent Profiles for a Clean December
Seasonal scent doesn’t need to feel like you walked past a Bath and Body Works.
Skip anything overly sweet or aggressively spiced, it's not the scent of the woman you're aiming to be. Instead, go for fragrances that feel warm, dry, and classic.
Some reliable scent profiles:
- Amber for warmth without sugary sweetness
- Cedar or sandalwood for a masculine fragrance
- Fig for green, nature, and modern
These scents feel winter-appropriate without screaming Christmas. They layer well with natural smells already in the home, coffee, clean laundry, wood, paper.
Festive But Still Minimal Coffee Table
We love a styled coffee table as much as the next lifestyle addict, but in December it becomes a bit of a dumping ground for festive fare. Christmas cards, gift vouchers, present wrapping accessories, and before you know it, it looks more like something from Santa's grotto than your usual beautiful table,
As part of a clean December, we're thinking of the coffee table as an Architectural Digest feature, not a storage surface. Start by clearing everything. Then return only three elements:
- A foundation point: a couple of books, a tray, a big bowl or vase
- An accessory: a candle, an ornament, or small ceramic
- Something alive: greenery, moss, or a collection of citrus fruit or pomegranates
Avoid novelty items like its your ex boyfriend at brunch. No figurines, nothing that flashes, no seasonal slogans. The table should look styled, but easy to disturb.
The 15-Minute Nightly Tidy
This is the habit that saves us every December.
Every evening, set a timer for fifteen minutes. Tidy only what’s visible. Surfaces, tables, cushions, bathroom and kitchen counters. No deep cleaning any cupboards, wardrobes or cabinets. This small reset keeps clutter from building and ensures you wake up to a calm space, even during the busiest weeks of the year.
